Hurricane Wilma: Thoughts and Photographs

Random thoughts on Wilma

by Tony

– It would seem to me the best place to stage distribution centers would be at the supermarkets.
– Wider dispersal of needed ice and water.
– Retail stores are built to handle demand from the public.
– This didn’t happen. Instead, we got directed to parks we’ve never been to. We got led on wild goose chases, where supplies weren’t there until 9pm at night … after being told they would be there by noon.
– Let those with customer service experience, in conjunction with government and charity officials, serve the people.
– My first bags of ice? From BJ’s, after power came on there four days after the storm! Good thing we had stocked up on ice before the storm!

– If you call FEMA, have a lawyer next to you. They scare you to death with a disclaimer that basically says, “If you lie, you die,” and then proceed to ask questions that would leave Alan Dershowitz scratching his head.

– We need to stop planting and replanting non-indigenous trees in South Florida, or at the very least don’t let them grow above or next to a power line. A lot of power outages were due to this.
– The palm trees faired much better. I only saw a couple that were sawed in half by wind and debris.

– We had our 72-hour hurricane preparedness kit … since we didn’t have power for three weeks, I think we’ll have a 1468-hour kit next time!

– Three-year-olds will go to sleep at 8pm … just dim those lights and turn off those televisions!

– Don’t believe the lie.  This storm was at least a strong Category 2 when it ripped through South Florida, not a Category 1.

There is no greater infamy than the war power against the children using the whole punitive power of the apparatus. Based on the instructions of the Politburo Central Committee, personally on the orders of Lenin and Stalin, the Bolsheviks created a special system of “disgraced childhood. This system had before it a children's camps and colonies, mobile reception and distribution centers, special children's homes and nurseries.
Children were supposed to forget who they are, where they came from, and who where their parents.

    This was a special – Children's Gulag …

Richard – are the heckles of Alan Dershowitz at an international meeting of political leaders any less offensive than the heckles of Arab American students? Or should Arab Americans have dressed in a clown outfit as they yelled like the French Jewish protestor? Is the Californian law on Crimes Against the Public Peace meant to maintain the peace by placing criminal sanctions on hecklers or was the law put in place for something greater – namely for acts of a more violent nature? What about the intimidatory and threatening behaviour of certain Knesset MP's towards Hanin Zuabi? Are you suggesting Knesset members involved in this should face criminal sanctions?

Mr. Howe seems to be suggesting that it is more energy efficient for many to live in houses on low density suburban small, farmed plots than for many to live in apartments on high density urban plots. I wonder whether this is so. I wonder whether the energy saved in sharing walls, having a much shorter distance to the food and energy distribution centers, etc. saves more energy overall. To be sure, the farmed suburbia model means the freight energy use is minimized if it has at most 20 miles to travel. But if the freight energy is increased, but the “to the store” energy is decreased, is there a net energy gain? Just a thought.

I am always for tougher sentences, especially in our liberal state. The justice system here is pretty much a joke. There are so many scams like you described. The issue is catching these jerks. They insulate themselves very well which makes it a long, exhausting, wild goose chase. I could go on forever here!!!..Sorry your car is acting up on ya!!!

bsfashion you are right, men's skirts hasn't been to main-stream retail-stores yet, but there is a demand of skirts formen. But on the other hand, it is a risk for retailer. Men's skirts first has to go in public in different ways.
In case of change of fashion for men, there is no change for a couple hundred years, because men wore just pants. Changing the pants to other garments is the question, off the stereotype pants collection into something very different. And that could be skirts, I think.

    Hi, Brett

You have just identified the most worrisome aspect of all this. Many people do, indeed, not understand how positive a customer service experience can be. They are so used to mediocre treatment (giving and getting) that they just accept it. I'm reminded of that great quote from English philosopher Edmund Burke, who said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’” Aimed at a much more serious and global level, but the basic idea holds true. If nobody expects better treatment, nobody will get better treatment.

    Thanks for commenting!

I agree with this proposal, we need to have San Leandro in this mix, as we are sandwiched in from all direction and multiple chemical compounds from the East the 880 FWY, West Oakland Airport, Rail yard, foundries, and Alco metal and Waste management. From the South Big Box Stores Costco, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and other distribution centers along the 880 corridor, just to name a few. We want to be part of this study. I just came back from a conference for CA Healthy Homes, I like to discuss with you.

What was the store? We have a very local store that has a huge online presence – I wonder if its the same one! If so, I can at least vouch for their credibility since I've actually be in their shop (and it is very homey and family-owned) but it doesn't sound so much like them based on your customer service experience, so now I'm dying to know.

I'd just cancel the order. And then buy your fabric through etsy too :)
