9-11 does not equal watchmen

Subject: 9/11 does not equal Watchmen

Looked over Watchmen last night. I know the message board compared 9/11, the death of a few thousand people in two buildings, to the death of MILLIONS of people (HALF of NY) at the hands of an ALIEN, demonstrating that a positive global change did not occur.

I think that comparison clearly overestimates 9/11 and underestimates Watchmen.

The Soviets realized that there is a common enemy that threatens all of earth, so they ended hostilities. The message board analogy fails because in 9/11 America was the only target due to foreign policy, and we were already “at war” with terrorists.

But if an ALIEN destroyed half of NY, well, then every nation would have felt threatened and settle differences.

But all of this is besides the point because our earth does not have two nuclear super-powers like Watchmen. What would Ozymandias be stopping? We are not at the brink of a nuclear holocaust. Would he try to stop terrorism? That’s not possible, just like he couldn’t stop drugs if he wanted to. If he still wanted to make a global positive change, Ozymandias would have to come up with a different plan if he existed in this reality. That plan would be closer to
Return of Joshua. So I am very curious as to 1) what the threat will be in the movie, and 2) how it is implemented.

[Tony here: we discussed this later, and concluded that if they do the
death ray thing as mentioned in the message boards, it should be multiple rays,
striking a major city in every continent.  And then a space ship crash
lands on earth, complete with fake yet realistic alien bodies.  So,
millions die, and the world is united against a possible alien invasion.
Just one idea being thrown out there.  Damian mentioned the psychic shock
of the alien in the original comic -- I hope that can be incorporated in their
new version, as well.

Of course, Damian and I would prefer at 12-episode Watchmen miniseries on
HBO, with Alan Moore in full creative control.]

RE: Last conversation between Dr. Manhattan and Ozy: “Everything remains the same”. You are correct. Probably referring to the never ending cycle of war and peace. Since the Doctor can see into the future, he sees that Ozy just put a temporary band-aid on the current crisis.

Sidenote: Could Dr. Manhattan jump from universe to universe? Would DC ever have the balls to do that?

Wishful thinking: Watchmen 2, Issue 1, full close-up of Rorschach’s “face” and hat. Sold out before it hits the stands.

Ha! Um, yeah, that's a valid statement. Most Alan Moore comics are kind of disturbing, but I guess Lost Girls probably has the most limited audience of his works. I read it because it was written by Alan Moore and everything he touches is gold, but I did find it a difficult read. The only reason I was so patient with it was because the writing really was pretty good.

I think Rorschach represents the true depiction of a black and white comic book superhero. He divides the line between good and evil that is nonexistent in the real world but is imagined in utopia or popular media. This is what a true “batman” “superman” or even “captain america” would look like in the real world

“I’m not so sure I would describe either one of these as being “American”. Both books are from English writer Alan Moore and two English artists; one (Watchmen) being Dave Gibbons and the other (Batman: The Killing Joke) by an English artist who’s name I will not mention on this blog ever again.”

If you look at it that way, there really aren't many “American” comic books. Alan Moore writing about Yanks for an American publisher and getting paid in dollars and cents, instead of pounds and pence, is about as American as contemporary comics get.

Thank you for reading and reviewing “The Killing Joke”. In my opinion, it isn't Moore's best work; however, I enjoy the special look at Batman and the Joker's relationship.

For Batman stories, I think the most notable are: “The Long Halloween” and Frank Miller's “The Dark Knight Returns” (which I'm not much of a fan of Miller outside of DKR, but even that has macheese-mo galore – Miller, in my opinion, over does the masculinity factor creating cheesy macho/machismo scenarios and characters).

For Alan Moore stories, I think my favorites are: “Watchmen” (which you've already noted) and “V for Vendetta” (which you've also already noted).

For Alan Moore Batman Stories – “The Killing Joke” is tops! (and a good quick intro to the Batman/Joker).

    Thanks again for the post!

    A couple of further suggestions:

    Shaun Tan's The Arrival

    Alan Moore's From Hell

    They are vastly different works:
The Arrival is a sequence of wordless panels – you'd be tempted to say pictures worth a thousand words,

while From Hell is a 580-page Behemoth – dense, multilayered, and complex as any novel.
