23_why_ryno_should_be_in

Click
here for the Chicago Sun-Times article which said Ryne Sandberg didn’t deserve
to be in the Hall.

And now, a response from DailySkew co-owner Tony Vahl:

So Ryno didn’t hustle enough? I guess that means Barry Bonds
won’t be getting the Chicago Sun-Times vote, either, b/c he conserves himself
… instead of getting needlessly injured in May!

Let’s vote Charlie Hustle in, then. I’m sure they support Pete
Rose, following their logic. Yeah, right.

Did they vote for Andre Dawson? Or Jody Davis?

Please.

Goog blog. I agree with ya. In my opinion, If the MLB lets Players who used steroids, they need to let Pete Rose in. Aka …Charlie Hustle played the game with more passion than most players, and obviously had natural talent, and the heart and will to play hard and consistent. Its just too bad he got caught up in Gambling. But yeah we need baseball to be clean, and I think thats what is happening…we'll see. We can still Honor the players who now and in the past, werent cheating with steroids or HGH. Those players still make it a sport worth watching. God Bless…talk to ya soon Paul……………Jeff p.s.

rose compromised the game in an unfathomable manner. If you don't let the black sox in, you can't let in rose, he's a chump. he got all those hits slapping the ball around on astro turf, and playing until he was 75 years old.on stats alone sure he'd be in. but he bet against his own team. unless he bet on the reds in every single game, he bet against them. If he had a grand on a game, he'd manage to win at all costs, compromising the game in a number of very obvious ways. This isn't even taking into consideration ending the catcher from Oakland's career in an exhibition game. If he gets in at all I hope its posthumously, so his massive ego doesn't get inflated even more, and he does not receive vindication. But if he get in posthumously, Joe Jackson deserves it too. Charlie Hustle is a fraud.

But you're right, giving the direction of American foreign policy in the second of the 20th century, it may be a caveat. It doesn't mean they can't do it. As for AIPAC: nope. Hey, we had to disagree on something.

The more I think about it, the more I think of the cliche that really fits for Andre Dawson, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell … It's the Hall of Fame. It's not the Hall of Very Good. Dawson's numbers just aren't that impressive. He didn't get on base at big clip. He didn't drive in a bunch of runs. He was a really good player. Not a Hall of Famer.

I think it is obvious why Andre Dawson won MVP over Dale Murphy in 1987. He had 32 more RBIs and made $1.2 million less. I think that qualifies as “most valuable” don't you?

    Windy City Questions

    1) Do you think the Chicago Sun Times would benefit from taking the Windy City's approach to online journalism rather than the print medium?

    2) Do you believe that leaving the decision of important, useful or enjoyable news up to normal citizens is effective? or could there be a possibility of entertainment news bouncing to the forefront as it seemingly has?

    3) Do you believe this type of journalism will become a regular source of news and effect how other forms of media are consumed?

Certainly the legacy of UK basketball is undeniable, but I just can't buy the “fill-in-coach-here” philosophy.

The difference between high school stars a generation ago and now is that…

THEN they were dreaming of playing at the big programs (UK, UCLA, Indiana, etc.) The very key to those BIG programs was having alot of success AND having the same coach for 20-30 years, not changing every 5 or 6.

NOW the best players want big paychecks after one year. The key to that is finding the best coach to showcase your talent (i.e. draw up plays for you, let you play 35-40 minutes a game, etc). There's a reason why OJ Mayo is going to play for Tim Floyd and not Bobby Knight. Hell Mayo wouldn't even give Floyd his personal cell phone number when he agreed to play for USC. But Floyd surely will be calling Mayo's number at the end of the game, while Knight would be calling a senior's.

There can't be any doubt that the UK program suffered under Tubby now that it's over. Despite regular season successes and a couple trips to the Elite 8 in the past 5 years, Tubby never could get a handle on getting those freshman phenoms that would vault UK to the top (Melo, Oden, Durant, etc) and got stuck with phenom wanna-bes like Randolph Morris who couldn't even get drafted after leaving his freshman year. Hell Tubby couldn't even pronounce some of his players' names (i.e. “The Polish”) The last time UK had a NBA draft pick in the top 15 was 1997 Ron Mercer (#6)

The consistent factor at UK to me has been defense. Certainly that was never ignored under Tubby. But this past year pointed out a sharp disparity in play when UK does not have the great spot-up 3 point shooters it has had in the past. (Padgett, Sheppard, Prince, Sparks, etc).

In their last game vs. Kansas, the Bradley- Crawford- Meeks trio went 8-31 FGs against a weak Kansas defense. Even still UK only lost by 12 with BRUTAL shooting from its guards. Did any UK fan feel confident at the end of games last year that if someone got a wide-open 3 at the end that they would ice it?

Does anyone think Florida would have won the National Championship without Lee Humphrey last year? Humphrey at 6-2 and 190lbs certainly wasnt topping recruiting charts a few years ago. But in Florida's last 3 games in the tournament, he went 15-28 from 3-point land. Back in the hey-day of UK basketball, a guy like Humphrey would have been raining 3s for them.

Billy Gillespie certainly has some stroke now that he turned around a terrible Texas A&M program. And I'm sure Patrick Patterson will be a helluva player at the 4. But Gillespie has to realize that the need for shooters is UKs biggest deficiency. Last year Texas A&M was a great defensive team like UK. But Acie Law, a senior PG, saved Gillespie's ass on numerous occasions with premium, clutch long-range shooting. Hopefully UK will be able to get back to their (usually white, slow, and semi-unathletic) outstanding spot-up 3 point shooters that brought the team to glory.

Coach Gillespie must start getting UK's players drafted higher because relying on the program's prestige and nice practice facilities won't get them anywhere in today's game. Unless we go back to the 60's in a time machine where freshman can't play in the NCAA, the best players will continue to go for the most accomodating coaches for their NBA dreams, no matter what the program and prestige is.

Barry Bonds has not been convicted of anything. He has not been accused of betting on games or throwing games. Barry Bonds has not been accused of assaulting anyone. Barry Bonds has been accused of not being a nice guy by the media, but is that a crime?

Barry Bonds has been accused of not telling the truth to a grand jury investigating BALCO. Barry Bonds does not own BALCO and does not distribute steroids on behalf of BALCO.

Why was the grand jury investigating Barry Bonds? Weren't they supposed to be investigating BALCO? How did that “investigation” of BALCO turn into a witch hunt directed against MLB players? Clearly, BALCO wasn't the real target in the campaign against Barry Bonds.

What “immediate danger” to Major League Baseball does Barry Bonds pose, that requires Barry Bonds' suspension prior to a decision in Bonds' upcoming trial?

In fact, wouldn't the presence of Barry Bonds on a Major League Baseball team roster – the Baltimore Orioles, for instance – be an immediate big boost to that team's attendance as well as a big boost to their chances of winning?

In effect, MLB teams are willing to lose money rather than hire Barry Bonds. Isn't that the definition of a “blacklist”? The actors, singers, directors etc. who were “blacklisted” during the McCarthy era witch hunt were money makers for the entertainment industry, yet no owner would hire them! Isn't that exactly what is happening with Barry Bonds?

Weren't many of these talented performers indicted and some convicted for refusing to cooperate with grand juries and dragged before government staged hearings in front of hundreds of cameras and reporters?

Years later many of those “blacklisted” were apologized to, but did that apology make up for the destruction of their livelihoods and their personal lives during the McCarthy “blacklisting”? Of course not!

I have a special disgust for the owners of the San Francisco Giants. They made millions off of Barry Bonds. They were able to build a money making stadium based, to a great extent, on Barry Bonds. Where is their gratitude? Nowhere!

He was their star player who was loved by the fans in the Bay area, yet the SF Giants team owners shamefully released Barry Bonds after the 2007 season so as to do their part in the “blacklisting”! They deserve a Hall of Shame of their own!

Years from now, when Major League Baseball is forced to apologize to Barry Bonds for their actions, that apology will never make up for the crime that Major League Baseball is inflicting today on Barry Bonds and on the many fans who admire the athletic greatness that Barry Bonds has been as a player.

I also admire him for his unbending, “in your face” attitude during constant attacks from the big business media, especially the sports talk radio and cable channels that have to fill 24-hour-a-day air time by creating controversy and scandal where there would have been little or none before those media outlets were created.

I appeal to the fans of Major League Baseball to bombard their team owners with letters and emails and petitions demanding that their team hire Barry Bonds.

Imagine, for instance, Barry Bonds added to the roster of the woeful offense of the Baltimore Orioles.

Imagine the magical confrontations in the American League East with David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez at Fenway Park and Camden Yards and with Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium and Camden Yards.

Wouldn't that do wonders for attendance for a Baltimore Orioles franchise that has been down in the dumps for so long?

An historic wrong is being committed by the owners. Do we want to have a posthumous apology to Barry Bonds, as was done for Jim Thorpe, or do we correct this wrong NOW? Barry Bonds is this era's Babe Ruth.

He's the biggest star in our national pastime.

I appeal to the fans to help us right this wrong. I want to see Barry Bonds playing baseball in 2008!

To all concerned fans: Perhaps you could use the above as a petition circulated at stadiums or handed out at stadium gates. I know that millions of you will still be in attendance at MLB games.

While there, couldn't you also do your part in fighting against the shameful “blacklisting” of Barry Bonds, the greatest hitter in Major League Baseball history?
